Irene Markowitz (born December 4, 1925 in Benrath ; † January 16, 2010 there ) was a German art historian and custodian of Benrath Palace .

Life

Irene Markowitz was born in the Kavaliershaus of Schloss Benrath as the daughter of the city's building officer Hans Markowitz . There, the father directed the restoration work. Since her family belonged to the descendants of the Prussian gardening director Peter Joseph Lenné , she was also interested in garden art and architecture in her cradle. In 1944 she graduated from the Benrather Hermann-Löns-school, secondary school for boys , a Notabitur , a second baccalaureate followed after the Second World War in Bielefeld . In 1946 she began a traineeship in the municipal art collection in Düsseldorf . She then studied art history, history, German and archeology at the University of Cologne . There she received her doctorate in 1955 with the work on the history of forms of the garden house in Germany . After a career as a research assistant at the Düsseldorf City Art Collection, which began in 1958, she became deputy director of the Düsseldorf City Museum in 1969 . In this function, she was in charge of Benrath Castle, which was assigned to her department, until her retirement in 1990, where she also lived and died at the age of 84.

During the extensive renovation of Benrath Palace, in particular its Corps de Logis , from 1973 to 1984 she had a special responsibility as a monument conservationist and coordinator. For many years she was a member of the DGGL's Historical Gardens Working Group . After her retirement, she remained connected to the castle by submitting an extensive application for its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List and working with Rose-Marie Wörner and her husband Gustav for the restoration of the parterre in front of the orangery . Furthermore, she made a name for herself through various art historical writings, especially through work on the Düsseldorf School of Painting . In recognition of her achievements, the North Rhine-Westphalian state government awarded her the title of professor in 1981 .
