Irene Montero (2017)

Irene Maria Montero Gil (born February 13, 1988 in Madrid ) is a Spanish psychologist and politician of the Podemos party . She has been Minister for Gender Equality in Pedro Sanchez's government since January 2020 .

Life

By the age of 15, Montero had already joined the Communist Youth Association, and shortly afterwards she began to get involved in various civic movements such as something called the 15M.

In 2006 she started studying at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and graduated in 2011 in psychology . For academic reasons, she lived in Chile for five months between 2009 and 2011 , where she took part in student marches such as the alternative summit La Hora de los Pueblos. Between 2010 and 2011 she worked as a saleswoman in the electronics and household appliance chain Saturn .

Between 2011 and 2013 she studied and earned a master's degree in educational psychology . For her academic achievements, she received a PhD scholarship for university teacher training (UAM) between 2013 and 2015, which led to a scholarship for a training stay at Harvard University in the United States, which she declined due to her political commitment.

Montero has been a member of the Congreso de los Diputados since January 2016 . She is married to the politician Pablo Iglesias Turrión and has three children.

Political career

Podemos

She joined the Podemos party after the 2014 European Parliament elections along with Rafa Mayoral from the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH), where both were activists. In November 2014, after running for the Podemos Citizens Council, she was appointed head of social movements and began to lead the cabinet of Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias .

Montero ran as a candidate in the elections for the Congress of Representatives in Madrid in December 2015 and was elected fourth on the Podemos list in the constituency. As an elected MP, Montero was a member of the Commission for Promotion and spokeswoman for her group in the Commission for Education and Sport.

In the meantime, Montero took up a secret relationship with Pablo Iglesias.

After new parliamentary elections were scheduled for June 2016, Montero was included in Madrid at number 4 on the list of Unidos Podemos , a coalition of Podemos with Izquierda Unida and other left-wing formations. She renewed her seat as a deputy in the elections and was a member of the Constitutional Commission, the Home Affairs Commission, the Education and Sport Commission, the Commission for Control of Appropriations for Reserved Expenditures and the Advisory Commission on Appointments for the entire 12th legislative term.

In spring 2018 it was announced that Montero and her partner Pablo Iglesias had bought a detached house with a garden and swimming pool in an urbanization on Galapagar in order to live in the countryside far from Madrid. The purchase was made through a € 540,000 mortgage offered by the Caixa d'Enginyers credit union, payable between the two within 30 years.

This decision was controversial (Iglesias denounced the threats and "fascist rallies" in front of his house) and sparked an internal party debate. The allegations attacked Montero and Iglesias for becoming what they themselves had always denounced, namely, part of a social elite - a caste - removed from real society.

The couple decided to reinforce their position as leaders of Podemos by convening a consultation within the party base. In the vote in May 2018, they were confirmed in office with the participation of nearly 190,000 party members, 68.42% of whom were in favor of the continuity of Iglesias and Montero.

In July 2018 she became the mother of two premature twins, Leo and Manuel, and in mid-2019 she gave birth to a daughter named Aitana.

On November 14th she appeared on the international list "30 Under 30 - Europe - Law & Policy 2017" of the American magazine Forbes as one of the most influential politicians under 30 of 2017.

Legal disputes

In November 2019, a chauffeur filed a lawsuit against Irene Montero for allegedly violating her rights and performing tasks outside of her duties. Shortly afterwards, following a financial settlement with the plaintiff, the proceedings were closed.

Minister for Equality

In January 2020, when Pedro Sánchez was sworn in as Prime Minister of the government following an agreement on a coalition government between the PSOE and the Podemos party, Montero was appointed Minister of Equality. She took office with the other members of the Council of Ministers, chaired by Pedro Sánchez on January 13, 2020. She appointed Noelia Vera as Secretary of State for Equality and Amanda Meyer as Chief of Staff.

On March 12, 2020, amid the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain, the government announced that Minister Irene Montero had tested positive for COVID-19 and indicated that her partner and second vice president of the government, Pablo Iglesias, was in quarantine for the same reason.
