As an activist of the social protest movement Movimiento 15-M ( Movement May 15 ) from 2011/12, he advanced to general secretary of the left-wing socialist party Podemos (“We Can”), which was founded in spring 2014 . In the 2019 Spanish parliamentary elections , Podemos became the fourth-strongest parliamentary group in an electoral alliance with the communist- dominated party alliance Izquierda Unida under the name Unidas Podemos and formed a governing coalition with the PSOE . Iglesias has been one of the three vice-presidents of the Spanish government since January 2020 .

Life

Family background and young years

Pablo Iglesias was the son of Javier Iglesias Peláez, a labor law and social security inspector who was arrested during the Franco dictatorship, and of María Luisa Turrión Santamaría, a lawyer specializing in labor law (she is a lawyer for the Spanish trade union association Comisiones Obreras, CCOO ), born. His mother was the first in her family to go to university. Iglesias is his parents' only child. His grandfather, Manuel Iglesias, was a socialist and in the Second Republic commander in the Republican army. He was sentenced to death as a result of the Spanish Civil War and imprisoned for five years after a commutation. His maternal great-uncle was executed.

Both parents were organized underground as political activists of the FRAP (Frente Revolucionario Antifascista y Patriota). Pablo Iglesias was named after the founder of the Spanish socialist party Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) and the socialist trade union Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), Pablo Iglesias Posse (1850-1925), who had his birthday one day later. Iglesias spent the first years of his life in Vallecas , a working-class district of Madrid. In the municipality of Moratalaz he later attended the Instituto de Educación Secundaria Juana de Castilla , where he obtained the university entrance qualification. His first degree at the Complutense University in Madrid was law.

Iglesias is married to the Podemos politician Irene Montero , has three children with her and lives in Madrid.

academic career

Pablo Iglesias studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid , first law, with a law degree (2001), and then political science, where he obtained his diploma in 2004. He also received his doctorate from Complutense, with a doctoral thesis on the new forms of “disobedience” in a global civil society. In this regard, he documented a comparison between movements in Italy and Spain in the period from 2000 to 2005. In 2008 he received a doctorate in political and administrative sciences along with a special award for excellent performance. In 2010, he also completed a master's degree in human sciences with a focus on cultural studies at the Universidad Carlos III (also in Madrid) and a master's degree in communication with a focus on philosophy, film and psychoanalysis from the European Graduate School in Switzerland . From 2008 to 2014 he taught political science at the Universidad Complutense.

Political activities

He was politically organized very early on, always in movements or organizations with a left-wing orientation, initially in the Communist Youth Association of Spain (the Unión de Juventudes Comunistas de España ), where he was a member between 1994 and 1999. In 2001 he took part in the anti-globalization movement. From this time came an admiration for the politics of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela; via Juan Carlos Monedero, professor of political science at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, he subsequently received a. a. Consultant contracts with the Venezuelan government and also gave multiple paid guest appearances on Venezuelan television.

Later he was very active in the context of social protests in Spain . Together with other professors and lecturers from his faculty such as Juan Carlos Monedero, Carolina Bescansa and Ariel Jerez, he initiated alternative media projects such as the program “La Tuerka” (“The Mother of the Screw”), which was soon distributed on the Internet and gained considerable popularity among the public. Pablo Iglesias himself has received praise and criticism for his media literacy (he is a talented mediator who very soon gained considerably more followers on social networks than many seasoned Spanish politicians). His leading role within the Podemos was reaffirmed after the list he had cited won the open elections with 86.8% of the votes for a team that was tasked with organizing a constituent assembly of the newly founded party for autumn 2014. However, it was criticized that the deadlines were too short to be able to put forward further candidacies, so that only one other team could compete. Immediately after his election victory, Iglesias declared that his movement would “not be limited to the role of a spectator” but “change the political system in Spain that would save the banks and leave the rest of society to its own devices”. Pablo Iglesias was ultimately elected MEP for the Podemos candidacy. On June 25, 2014, the Confederal Group of the European United Left , which Podemos had joined, elected him as its candidate for the Presidency of the European Parliament .

In the parliamentary elections of December 2015 , Iglesias was again the top candidate of his party, which again immediately became the third largest group in the Chamber of Deputies of the Spanish Parliament with 20.7% and 69 seats ; After the failure of all coalition efforts, in which Podemos rejected any pact with the social democratic PSOE , and the resulting need for new elections, the party again became the third-largest group in parliament in June 2016 with 21.1%, but failed to achieve its self-imposed target, the PSOE to surpass.

In March 2018 it was announced that Iglesias is in a relationship with Irene Montero, Podemos spokeswoman in the lower house of parliament, and that they will have twins in October - in May 2018 the press reported that the couple had a "luxurious" villa with a swimming pool for over Will acquire 600,000 euros; Iglesias, who in 2012 accused the Minister of Economics, de Guindos, of having acquired a “luxury property” for 600,000 euros, was also criticized within the party. He and his partner then made their offices available. Nevertheless, in a member survey, a majority of party members who took part in the survey gave the couple just over 68% of their trust. Of the roughly 500,000 party members, around 190,000 cast their votes.

In an interview in June 2018, Iglesias described Israel as a “criminal” and “illegal country” that should be tackled more strongly.

In the Spanish parliamentary elections of April 2019 and November 2019 , Podemos was only the fourth-largest group in an electoral alliance with the communist- dominated party alliance Izquierda Unida under the name Unidas Podemos ; nevertheless the PSOE needed the support of Podemos. At the end of 2019, the PSOE and Podemos agreed on a government coalition with the tolerance of various small parties. Iglesias has been one of three vice-presidents in the cabinet of Pedro Sánchez's minority government since January 2020 .
