Irene von Mühlendahl

Irene von Mühlendahl (born February 14, 1912 in Reval , † May 30, 2003 in Hanover ) was a moderator of the German service of the BBC .

Life

Von Mühlendahl, who came from a German-Baltic family, had left Estonia with her parents after the First World War . After attending school and graduating from high school in Hanover and Blankenburg (Harz) , she worked as a director's secretary at the Aviation Research Institute in Braunschweig, from 1939 to 1942 as a translator and secretary at the Navy High Command in Berlin and from 1942 to 1944 as a director's secretary at Baltic Oil GmbH in Tallinn / Reval. After the end of the war and various activities in the Harz Mountains for the British military government and at a care center for displaced persons, she went to England in 1951, where she worked as a housemaid and auxiliary nurse until 1955. In 1955 she started working for the BBC's German service. At first she worked as a secretary, later as a spokesperson and editor .

From 1974 to 1993 von Mühlendahl moderated the most popular series of the German service with the tips for tourists . In the three-minute program broadcast daily, she presented the country's scenic, architectural and cultural sights. The program was particularly popular with listeners in the German Democratic Republic who were prevented from visiting the sites presented. In some cases, von Mühlendahl received more than 6,000 responses from listeners a year.

In 1992 the BBC released a cassette with selected programs from the Mühlendahls. Your estate is in the German Broadcasting Archive .
