features

The elderberry iris is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 40 to 60 centimeters. The basic axis is creeping short, thick and quite branched. The stems are branched, sometimes from the bottom. The leaves are gray-green and shorter than the stem. The bracts are rather inflated and dry on the upper side. The flowers smell strongly of elder, which is also referred to by German and scientific names. The outer perigone sections are dirty gray-blue or cloudy yellow-violet and yellowish at the base. At the top they are quite stranded and they suddenly narrow into the nail. The anthers are shorter than the stamens. The scar is a dirty yellow. The tips of the upper lip of the stylus branches are egg-shaped and meet.

The flowering time is in May and June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species was not originally native to Central Europe, but has become naturalized in places. Its origin is unclear, possibly it represents a hybrid of Iris germanica and Iris variegata . It grows on stony slopes, on rocks, on mountain meadows, on walls and on old castles. In South Tyrol it occurs up to an altitude of 950 meters.
