Iron Fist ( English for iron fist ) is a distance-active hardkill protection system for land vehicles from the manufacturer Israel Military Industries (IMI).

history

The system was presented in 2006 and extensively tested by the Israeli army in 2007 .

Protective effect

It offers protection against reactive anti-tank rifles , anti-tank guided weapons , shaped charge projectiles and balancing projectiles .

Components

The Iron Fist system consists of a starter with explosive interceptors, a radar , a passive infrared sensor and the main control unit. Due to its modular design, it can be used on all common military vehicles including tanks.

functionality

A permanently installed radar sensor from Elta and an optionally upgradeable infrared seeker from Elbit automatically detect approaching projectiles and missiles, calculate the optimal point of defense and launch a pressure wave-driven explosive interceptor in the direction of the approaching threat. This explodes shortly before the enemy projectile, which is either destroyed, prevented from tracking or diverted from course. The warhead of the enemy projectile is not made to explode, but rather rendered ineffective by the pressure wave of the interceptor, which burns completely during its explosion. This avoids a classic fragmentation effect and the associated possible collateral damage .

The concept of an explosion near the target without necessarily hitting it eliminates the need for the complex interception technique that would otherwise be required. This means that high additional costs can be avoided.
