The Lexington Avenue in the district of Manhattan in New York City is one of the most famous streets of the city. It extends over a length of 8,900 m through Manhattan. It is bounded to the north by 130th Street in Harlem and to the south by 21st Street at Gramercy Park. South of Gramercy Park, Irving Place extends from 20th Street to East 14th Street . Park Avenue runs west of Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue runs east .

The road was laid out in the 1830s and got its name after a battle that took place in 1775 during the American Revolutionary War .

Important buildings

North of 30th Street on Lexington Avenue are numerous hotels and office buildings. These include a. the Chrysler Building , one of the city's landmarks , the Citigroup Center skyscraper from 1977 and the 570 Lexington Avenue skyscraper (formerly General Electric Building and RCA Building ) in the Art Deco style from 1929 to 1931. This is also where you can find the 599 Lexington Avenue , which is 56th in the list of tallest buildings in New York at 199 m.

The street is served by the IRT Lexington Avenue Line of the New York Subway as well as by the bus routes M101, M102 and M103. It is a one-way street and can only be used in a southerly direction.

In culture

In the movie The Itchy Seventh Year with Marilyn Monroe , a well-known scene played on Lexington Avenue. In this, Marilyn's skirt is blown up through a ventilation shaft. The scene was shot on Lexington Avenue but later had to be re-shot in the studio.
