Iryna Gurevych (born March 16, 1976 in Vinnytsia ) is a German computer scientist specializing in automatic language processing (NLP) . She founded and heads the Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) working group in the Computer Science Department at TU Darmstadt .
Career
Gurevych began studying English and German philology in 1993 at the Kozjubynsky State Pedagogical University in Vinnytsia , from which she graduated in 1998 with a diploma “with distinction”. In 2003 she did her doctorate with a dissertation on the topic of "Analysis of linguistic inquiries in restricted areas of discourse" in Computational Linguistics at the University of Duisburg-Essen . From 2001 to 2005 she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the European Media Lab and EML Research . From 2005 to 2007 she was a senior scientist in the e-learning project at the TU Darmstadt . As head of an Emmy Noether research group at the DFG from 2007, she founded the research group “Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing” (UKP Lab) and was awarded a Lichtenberg professorship by the Volkswagen Foundation in 2008 . Since 2008 she has held the W3 professorship “Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing” at the TU Darmstadt.
Gurevych's main research areas are: Deep Learning for NLP, Argumentation Mining , Language Technology for Digital Humanities, Lexical-Semantic Resources and Algorithms, Text Mining & Analytics, Writing Assistance and Language Learning.
