Iryna Kalynez
Iryna Onufrijiwna Kalynez ( Ukrainian Ірина Онуфріївна Калинець , Russian Ирина Онуфриевна Калинец , * 6. December 1940 in Lviv , † 31 July 2012 ibid) was a Ukrainian poet, writer, politician and in the 1970s, Soviet dissident . Her husband was the dissident and writer Ihor Kalynez .
Iryna Kalynez graduated from the Ivan Franko University of Lviv with a degree in philology . She later taught Ukrainian literature and language before joining a human rights organization called “Schestidesjatniki” ( Russian Шестидеся́тники ) or “Children of XX. Party congresses ”. Kalynez was the editor of the banned human rights magazine Ukrainsky Wisnik ( Ukrainian Український Вісник ). She also publicly protested the detention of other dissidents. Kalynez and two other activists, Nadiya Svitlychna and Stefania Schabatura, were arrested for anti-Soviet propaganda. She was sentenced to six years in prison and another three years in exile .
Kalynez was able to return to Lviv in 1981 after completing his sentence. As a supporter of the Ukrainian independence movement, she soon joined the civil rights organizations Memorial and Ruch .
In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukrainian independence , she was elected to the first Verkhovna Rada . As long as her state of health permitted, she continued to write.
Iryna Kalynez died on July 31, 2012 at the age of 71 after a long illness.
Awards and memories
In 1998 she was awarded the Order of Princess Olga .
Since 2013 the “International Educational Foundation” has awarded the Iryna Kalynez Prize.
A school in Lviv has been named after her since December 21, 2017.
