Isaac Le Maire
Isaac Le Maire (* around 1558 in Tournai ; † September 20, 1624 in Egmond aan den Hoef ) was a Dutch entrepreneur, investor and major shareholder in the Dutch East India Company (VOC), born in Wallonia . He was a co-founder and the first president of the VOC. But he quickly fell out with the council of the East India Company and was expelled. He was forbidden to do business in the company's territory and on its trade routes. Le Maire then founded an "Australian Company" that was supposed to officially start trading with the theoretically conceived southern continent. Indeed, alternative routes should be sought to circumvent the East India Company's monopoly on trade with the Spice Islands . For this purpose he equipped an expedition under the command of his son Jacob Le Maire . On January 13, 1616 , the expedition discovered Cape Horn .
