Egmond is a former municipality, which consists of three small districts and is located in the Dutch province of North Holland . It is around 35 kilometers from Amsterdam and 10 kilometers from Alkmaar . The three districts are Egmond-Binnen , Egmond aan den Hoef and Egmond aan Zee , the largest district. Together with the villages of Schoorl and Bergen , they have formed the larger municipality of Bergen since January 1, 2001. The fishing village of Egmond aan Zee was mentioned for the first time in 977 and, together with the Benedictine abbey, has had an eventful history to this day. The abbey, which has been alive again since 1950, has contributed significantly to the upgrading of this area.

Egmond aan Zee

Egmond aan Zee is located directly on the sea and is preferred by tourists. Therefore the whole place Egmond is often mistakenly referred to as Egmond aan Zee . The old town center with its small, typically Dutch built houses is dominated by the lighthouse J.CJ van Speijk from 1834. In the 1950s, on the advice of school doctors, many city children were sent to the Princess Beatrix colony in Egmond aan Zee for several weeks or months to strengthen their poor health . Along the beach section - on the so-called promenade - large concrete apartment blocks counteract the otherwise quite village flair. This trend has been counteracted in recent years. In the south and north of Egmond an Zee, there is the Noordhollandse Duinreservaat , which is accessible for an entrance fee and is home to many animal and bird species from the coast. Private horticulture and livestock farming are also carried out there. On foot, on horseback or by bike, numerous hikes are possible on various routes on partially developed and paved paths. An offshore wind farm consisting of 36 wind turbines is located off the coast . In April 2015, sand washes up to improve coastal protection. This widened the sandy beach considerably.

Egmond inland

Egmond-Binnen was built around a famous abbey . The sea can be reached on foot or by bike via a two-kilometer path through the dunes. The village lives mainly from growing flower bulbs. In the center of the village there is a picturesque little church, surrounded by a romantic courtyard. To the right of the church you will find the path to the abbey. There you can visit a candle foundry and a small pottery and also buy their products. There are also changing art exhibitions.

Egmond aan den Hoef

Egmond aan den Hoef is the old seat of the Counts van Egmond . The ruins of their former castle are still worth seeing. In the 1930s, the German painter Erwin Johannes Bowien (1899–1972) lived here in exile . He created numerous drawings and paintings in and around Egmond aan den Hoef. In his memoirs he reports how the painter Huisman in Egmond helped him to rent an old house right across from the old castle ruins of the Count van Egmond, which was to house his apartment and studio until the Wehrmacht occupied the Netherlands.

Incorporations

All three districts were independent until 1978 and were then merged to form the municipality of Egmond. As part of the community reform, the towns of Bergen, Schoorl and Egmond were merged to form the greater community of Bergen on January 1, 2001. As far as local activities are concerned, they have retained their historically grown independence.
