Isabella Grigorjewna Baschmakova ( Russian Изабелла Григорьевна Башмакова , scientific transliteration Izabella Grigor'evna Bašmakova ; born January 3, 1921 in Rostov-on-Don ; † July 17, 2005 in Moscow ) was a Russian mathematician .

Life

Bashmakowa began her studies in 1938 at Lomonosov University in Moscow . During the Second World War she was evacuated and worked as a nurse in Samarkand . She returned to Moscow in 1943 and graduated in 1944. Her mentor during these years was Adolf Juschkewitsch . She received her PhD from the same university in 1948. In 1961 she qualified as a professor and in 1968 received a full professor at Lomonosov University. There she held regular lectures on the history of mathematics from 1948/49 until the 1990s, when she gave up teaching for health reasons. For many years she led the research seminar for the history of mathematics in Moscow with Yushkevich, Konstantin Rybnikow and Sofia Janowskaja.

Bashmakova was mainly concerned with the mathematics of antiquity, especially with Diophant of Alexandria and the analysis of his difficult arithmetic , but also z. B. with Archimedes (analysis of floating bodies , methods of infinitesimal calculus in Archimedes), number theory in the elements of Euclid , François Viète , algebraic number theory in the 19th century and the early history of algebra.

In 1986 she was invited speaker at the ICM in Berkeley. Bashmakova rarely traveled abroad, for example to France in 1966 and 1968 and to Greece in 1989, where she lectured in Athens and Thessaloniki. But she had many contacts with foreign math historians. In 2001 she received the Koyré Medal .
