Isabella of Austria-Teschen

Isabella Maria Theresia Christine Eugenie Archduchess of Austria-Teschen (born November 17, 1888 in Preßburg , † December 6, 1973 in La Tour de Peilz , Switzerland ) was the seventh daughter of Archduke Friedrich Maria of Austria, Duke of Teschen and Princess Isabelle Hedwig Franziska von Croÿ-Dülmen . She was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen-Teschen.

Life

The birth of the little princess was a special event in Pressburg. The Pressburger Zeitung wrote on 18 November 1888 entitled A happy event in the Archduke's family , inter alia: Your quays and Kings.. Your Highness Archduchess Isabella was happily delivered yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock by a healthy princess. The princess was baptized on November 22nd, 1888 in the white hall of the archducal palace by the Prussian pastor, Bishop Karl Heiller . Her godmother was Maria Theresa von Württemberg .

Isabella married Prince Georg Franz Josef of Bavaria , son of Prince Leopold of Bavaria and Archduchess Gisela Louise Marie of Austria , on February 10, 1912 in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. Prince Georg Franz Josef was a grandson of Emperor Franz Joseph I . The Neue Wiener Journal wrote about a "splendid wedding in the imperial house and family dinner in Schönbrunn". The emperor personally attended the wedding.

The marriage to Georg Prince of Bavaria was annulled in 1913 because the marriage was never consummated. Prince George became a priest, librarian in the Vaticana and canon of St. Peter in Rome . After that, Isabella remained unmarried and childless until the end of her life. According to Princess Catherine Radziwill ( The Austrian Court from Within, London 1916, p. Xxx), she was a nurse in her father's army during the First World War . She was briefly engaged to the surgeon Paul Albrecht (1873–1928) until the old emperor forbade her from this connection.

She died at the age of 85 and, at her own request, was buried next to her sister Marie Christina in the princely hereditary funeral in Anholt .
