Isatou Nyang

Isatou "Ida" Nyang (born July 3, 1984 in Serekunda ) is a Gambian athlete who specializes in disabled sports .

Life

Nyang's legs are not properly trained, so she sits in a wheelchair. She lives in Serrekunda . She married when she was 18, had two children, and later divorced. Around 2000 she began to practice athletics and wheelchair basketball . She was the only woman on her team.

In September 2011 she was elected to the board of the Gambia Association of the Physically Disabled (GAPD).

At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, she was the second person from Gambia to take part alongside Demba Jarju and was the flag bearer. She was the first woman from Gambia to take part in Paralympic Games. She started in the starting class T54 over 100 meters, where she was last in the lead with 20.32 seconds and was eliminated. She was disqualified over 800 meters.

In 2013 her participation in the World Athletics Championships for the disabled in Lyon was planned, but ultimately did not take part.

At the July 22nd Marathon Race on October 15, 2014 in Gambia, she came second behind (the non-disabled) Mariama T. Jallow .

In December 2015, she took part in competitions in Guinea-Bissau, where she won the competition over 200 meters. She also played on the men's wheelchair basketball team, which was eliminated after two losses.

In August 2018 she took part in the African Para Powerlifting Championship in the weight class up to 73 kg, but could not place.

For many years she has been making a living by begging due to a lack of employment opportunities. Gambian Paralympic athletes are dependent on sponsors due to a lack of government support. At the Summer Paralympics in 2016 they could not participate due to lack of funding.

Awards

In July 2011, she was named Paralympian of the Year 2010 at the National Sports Awards of the Sports Journalists' Association of The Gambia (SJAG). She was the only female athlete to receive an award that year. She was nominated again for the award in 2011 and won it again in 2012/2013.

The Union of African Women Sports Reporters (UFRESA ) awarded her the jury prize for her achievements in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) at the end of March 2012 .
