The Isenberg is a hill on the left side of the Ruhr, east of Niederbonsfeld and west of Hattingen-Mitte . Its highest point is 160  m above sea level. NHN . The mountain extends as a harrow across the Ruhr in a southwest or northeast direction. It lies on the northern edge of the Rhenish Slate Mountains . It is overgrown with a mixed oak and beech forest .

On the northeastern spur are the Isenburg ruins from the 12th century with the Custodis house from the 19th century. The bridge over the neck ditch is modern, the entrance to the castle was originally at the other end. The Isenburg open-air theater is located near the castle keep . A climbing garden of the German Alpine Club (DAV) is located further to the southwest on the ridge .

To the northwest it is bounded by the Isenbergbach and the Osterdeller Bach , which empties into the Deilbach, and the street Am Isenberg. At the foot of the Ruhr there is a campsite and the “Tum Bur” restaurant. To the south-east it is bounded by a stream, the Isenberger Weg and the Leberhofer Straße (L 924). Here is a disused quarry, at the foot of which there used to be a brick factory. There is a shooting range there today. In the south-west, you can find Kidneyhof with the Deilbach .

At the foot of the castle was a ford across the Ruhr for the Hilinciweg . In the area of the ford there is a small cave in the mountain. Below the castle itself there is a rock niche in which Stone Age finds were made.
