Isidoor Leusen

Isidoor Roger Leusen (born  December 17, 1923 in Ghent ; †  January 17, 2010 ) was a Belgian physiologist who was a professor at Ghent University . He was particularly concerned with the regulation of various body functions and systems and received the Francqui Prize for his research .

Life

Isidoor leusen was in 1923 in Ghent born and graduated in 1948 at the local university to study medicine with the promotion from. After working as a research assistant at the university from 1948 to 1953, he obtained there in 1953 with the Agrégé de l'Enseignement Supérieur a teaching qualification comparable to a habilitation .

He then worked as a lecturer at Ghent University before he was appointed full professor and head of the laboratory for normal and pathological physiology in 1962. In 1964 he was President of the Belgian Society of Physiology and Pharmacology, and five years later he took over the presidency of the Belgian Society of Biology. He died in 2010.

Scientific work

Isidoor Leusen was particularly concerned with the metabolism of the brain and the regulation of breathing , the cardiovascular system and other vegetative body functions. With his studies on the role of the hydrogen ion concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid in the regulation of breathing, he confirmed, among other things, the fundamental correctness of the reaction theory of the German physiologist Hans Winterstein .

Awards

Isidoor Leusen was a full member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Medicine from 1962. In 1969 he received the most important Belgian science award, the Francqui Prize .
