Controversial area between Costa Rica and Nicaragua

The Isla Calero is an uninhabited island between the mouth of the Río San Juan , which forms the border between Costa Rica and Nicaragua forms, the Caribbean Sea and the southern mouth of the Río Colorado .

The island has an area of 151.6 km². Their affiliation has been disputed between Nicaragua and Costa Rica since the 1820s. In the Cañas – Jerez Treaty between the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Máximo Jerez Tellería and the Costa Rican General José María Cañas Escamilla , the Río San Juan was established as the border between the two countries in 1858. Since then, the island was de facto administratively subordinate to the Costa Rican province of Limón , whereas the river otherwise belonged to Nicaragua in full width. In addition to the Isla Brava to the south, the island forms part of the Refugio Nacional de Fauna Silvestre Barra del Colorado; Calero is the largest island in the Central American country.

In November 2010, the island was the focus of a media dispute when the Nicaraguan army occupied it. A Nicaraguan commander justified his presence with information from Google Maps . Costa Rica's position is that an arbitration award accepted by both countries in 1897 awarded the island of Costa Rica. Costa Rica asked Google to change the demarcation on its map, while Nicaragua wants the current version to be recognized.

Google Maps then changed its demarcation according to Costa Rica's view. On November 8, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insulza , flew over the island.

On November 12, 2010, at the request of Costa Rica, the OAS dealt with the occupation by the army of Nicaragua. With a voting ratio of 22-2 (the only dissenting votes came from the representatives of Nicaragua and Venezuela), the member states demanded the immediate withdrawal of Nicaraguan troops. Nicaragua ignored the demand and threatened to withdraw from the OAS in return. Nicaragua's head of state Daniel Ortega then blatantly accused states that had voted for the withdrawal of Nicaraguan troops to be puppets of the drug cartels and to base their foreign policy on them.

After Costa Rica the matter to the International Court of Justice ( International Court of Justice had brought) in The Hague, found there from 11 to 15 January 2011, the hearings of the two parties instead. On December 16, 2015, the International Court of Justice awarded the island of Costa Rica and sentenced Nicaragua to reparation payments.

Administrative affiliation

Administratively, the island is integrated into Costa Rica as follows:

  • Location ( poblado ): San Francisco
  • District ( distrito ): Roxana
  • Canton ( cantón ): Pococí
  • Province ( provincia ): Limón

According to Nicaragua, the island belongs to the municipality ( municipio ) of San Juan de Nicaragua (formerly known as San Juan del Norte and in English Greytown) in the department of Río San Juan .
