Isla San Pedro Mártir is an uninhabited Mexican island in the Gulf of California . It is named after Saint Peter of Verona , also called Petrus Martyr ( Spanish: Pedro Mártir ) and administratively belongs to the state of Sonora .

The island is comparatively isolated in the middle of the Gulf of California, halfway around 50 km between the town of San Rafael in Sonora and the town of El Barril on the Baja California peninsula . It is located around 40 km south of the island of Tiburón and 50 km southeast of the San Lorenzo archipelago . Isla San Pedro Mártir is 2.4 km long, up to 2 km wide and has an area of ​​2.73 km². The hilly and arid island reaches a height of 321 m above sea level. Because of its biodiversity - in addition to 27 species of plants, 53 land bird and 36 sea bird species are found on San Pedro Mártir - the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve Reserva de la Biosfera Isla San Pedro Mártir (RBISPM) and is therefore also part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage "Islands and Protected Areas in the Gulf of California" ( Islas y áreas protegidas del Golfo de California ).
