The Isla Suárez , in Portuguese Ilha de Guajará-mirim , is an Amazonian river island in the Río Mamoré .
The 2.58 km² island is located in the Río Mamoré between the Bolivian city of Guayaramerín in the Beni department and the Brazilian city of Guajará-Mirim in the state of Rondônia and its affiliation is disputed between the two countries. The administration is currently carried out by Bolivia.
The island is 3.3 km long and up to 1.1 km wide, its circumference is 7.9 km. There are two small islets on the east side, the smaller one in the north with 5300 m² and the larger one with 6400 m².
A majority of 70% of the island is owned by Brazilian owners, with Bolivians holding the rest. The disputes over affiliation go back to the Treaty of Ayacucho in 1867 between Bolivia and Brazil. The Treaty of Petrópolis 1903 was no more able to bring about a lasting agreement than any other. In 1958, the so-called Roboré - Acuerdo de Roboré Agreement was concluded between the two countries , in which the intention was expressed to resolve the outstanding issues, including the sovereignty over Isla Suarez. No significant change has occurred since then. The status of more than 80 islands in the Mamoré and Guaporé rivers remained unclear.
