The Isla de Alborán is an island of volcanic origin in the Mediterranean Sea belonging to Spain . Administratively it belongs to Almería . The island is located between the Andalusian mainland coast and North Africa , about 50 kilometers from the Moroccan Ras Tleta Madari and 90 kilometers from the mainland of Almería, and has been part of the Andalusian cities of Ceuta and Melilla since March 13, 1995, when the cities of Ceuta and Melilla on the North African coast Provinces of Cadiz and Málaga were carved out, the southernmost point of the autonomous community of Andalusia .
The area of the island is 7.12 hectares (0.0712 km²). Alborán forms an almost flat rock plateau about 15 meters above sea level. The island and the surrounding area were declared a Reserva Marina y Reserva de Pesca ( marine reserve) in 1997 and in 2003 also placed under nature protection as Paraje Natural . About 100 meters from the northeastern tip is the 200 square meter island, Isla de las Nubes .
On Alborán there is a pier , an unmanned lighthouse with a large abandoned lighthouse keeper's house, a small garrison of the Spanish Navy , a helipad , a football field and a cemetery with three graves.
Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria-Tuscany wrote the first comprehensive description of the island in 1898 .
The sea area in the western Mediterranean around the island to the Strait of Gibraltar is named after the island of the Alboran Sea . The Italian Alboran Trio has also named itself after the Isla de Alborán .
