The Chira Island is an island of Costa Rica . It belongs to the province of Puntarenas and forms one of the 13 districts of the canton of Puntarenas, with a population of 1534 according to the 2000 census. With an area of ​​43 km², it is the largest island in the Gulf of Nicoya and apart from two inland islands in the estuary of the Río San Juan is also the largest in Costa Rica. The west and south of the island are hilly, the north-east is occupied by a large estuary with mangroves . About 4000 people live on Chira , mainly in three villages. The most important source of income for the residents is fishing , there are also projects for sustainable development and tourism . The island can be reached via a boat connection from Puntarenas .

The island reaches its greatest height of 173 meters in the west.
