The Islisberg Tunnel is a section of the A4 motorway in the Knonaueramt southwest of Zurich in Switzerland and was opened on November 13, 2009. It leads from the Zurich West motorway junction near Birmensdorf in a south-westerly direction to the Jonentobel north-west of Affoltern am Albis in the Knonauer Amt . It is completely located in the canton of Zurich just on the border with the Aargau municipality of Islisberg . The tunnel is primarily intended to relieve the town of Hedingen from heavy through traffic.

The drive for the Islisberg tunnel was largely carried out using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with a shield diameter of 11.86 m. In the area of the north pre-cut (north portal), a section was excavated, 100 m of the east tube and 60 m of the west tube. The west tunnel was driven from north to south from spring 2004 to summer 2005. The TBM was then turned and opened the east tube, which was penetrated in mid-July 2006. The advance rate was approximately twenty meters per day. The excavated volume was 1.145 million cubic meters.

execution

The tunnel consists of two separate tubes at a distance of 25 m from the center of the tunnel. Each tube has two lanes with no hard shoulder. Cross connections every 300 m serve as escape routes into the other tube, which is why there was no need for a safety tunnel. Every third cross connection is also passable. The tubes have a gradient of 2.6% towards the southwest.
