Ismael Cortinas (born June 17, 1884 in San José de Mayo , † 1940 in Montevideo ) was a Uruguayan politician , journalist and playwright .

Cortinas, who studied in Montevideo, first appeared as a playwright in 1903 with the play Los dos altares in San José de Mayo. Other plays followed later, such as El Credo , La Rosa Natural , René Masón , Farsa Cruel and Otro Muerto . As a journalist he worked for the newspapers La Democracia and El Plata . He also chaired the Sociedad Uruguaya de Autores Teatrales .

Cortinas, who belonged to the Partido Nacional , sat in the 25th legislative period from February 16, 1915, initially as a deputy member of the Department of San José in the Cámara de Representantes . In the three following legislative periods he then held a titular mandate for the departments of Montevideo , Salto and Soriano . His time in the Chamber of Deputies, in which he was second vice-president in 1924, ended on March 26, 1925. On that day he moved to the Cámara de Senadores . He initially held the senatorial mandate until August 22, 1927 and from March 19, 1928 to March 20, 1929. During this time he worked in 1929 in succession to Duvimioso Terra as Senate President and belonged to the Consejo Nacional de Administración from 1929 until the coup under Gabriel Terra in 1933 .

The town of Ismael Cortinas , founded on October 18, 1950, was named after him in the Flores department .
