Ismail Ivanovich Sresnewski ( Russian Измаил Иванович Срезневский ; born June 1, jul. / 13. June  1812 greg. In Yaroslavl , Russian Empire ; † February 9 . Jul / 21st February  1880 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire) was a Russian philologist , paleographer , Slavist and ethnographer . He was the father of Boris , Vyacheslav and Vsevolod Sresnewski ( Всеволод Измаилович Срезневский ; 1867-1936).

Life

Ismail Sresnewski was born in Yaroslavl and spent his youth in Odessa , where his father was a professor at the New Russian University . In 1829 he graduated from the Imperial University of Kharkov with a degree in philology and began teaching there after completing his studies. As a professor of economics and statistics, he worked there from 1837 to 1839. From 1839 to 1842 he traveled through various Slavic countries to study their language and folklore. After his return in 1842 he received a professorship for Slavic Studies at Kharkiv University , which he held until 1846.

In 1847 he moved to Saint Petersburg , where he worked at the university as a professor until 1880 and as rector in the early 1860s. Among other things, included Anton Budilowitsch and Vladimir Lamanski to his students. Sresnewski had a leading role in the Ukrainian "Kharkiv Romantic School" and was the founder of the Petersburg Slavic School. Sresnewski wrote a large number of works on the history of South Slavic literature, the history of the Ukrainian and Russian languages, mythology, history and paleography . He developed the theoretical basis for Slavic-Russian palaeography for the first time. His main work was his posthumously published materials for the dictionary of the Old Russian language based on written records .
