Boris Ismailowitsch Sresnewski ( Russian Борис Измайлович Срезневский ; born March 19 . Jul / 31 March  1857 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire ; † 24. March 1934 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Russian meteorologist and university teachers .

Life

Sresnewski, son of the philologist Ismail Iwanowitsch Sresnewski , studied at the physics and mathematics faculty of the University of St. Petersburg with a degree in 1879. At the VII Congress of Naturalists he was the first to report on the evaporation of drops . This was then the subject of his dissertation , which he published in 1882. 1882-1892 he served in the main physical observatory as an unscheduled assistant to the director. In 1888 he became a lecturer at the University of St. Petersburg and held for three years, a meteorology - Lecture . In 1890 he helped found the meteorological scoreboard of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society . In 1891 he published his treatise on the relationship between the absolute humidity of the air and temperature . In 1892 he was appointed private lecturer at Moscow University . As head of observatories, he published the monthly Meteorological Observations , which first appeared in Moscow and then, after moving to Jurjew, in Jurjew.

In 1893 Sresnewski became Doctor honoris causa of the Imperial University Jurjew , which appointed him in 1894 as full professor and director of the meteorological observatory. In 1899 he became dean of the physics and mathematics faculty. In 1900 he took over the scientific management of the meteorological network of the Imperial Livonian Economic Society . In 1902 he received the small Lomonosov Prize. In 1907 he was awarded the Semyonov gold medal of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.

After the October Revolution , Sresnewski became director of the Kiev observatory in 1919 and taught meteorology and geophysics at the Kiev Institute of Education ( Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev ). He died in Kiev at the age of 76 and was buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .

The Slavist , photo pioneer and sports functionary Vyacheslav Ismailowitsch Sresnewski and the historian Vsevolod Ismailowitsch Sresnewski were Sresnewski's brothers.
