Ismail bin Omar Abdul Aziz ( Malay Ismail bin Omar Abdul Aziz Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama Awang Haji ; * 1911 in Johor in Malaysia , † 1994 in Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei ) was a vice mufti of Johor, a chief kadi of Johor and the first Mufti Negara Brunei (State Mufti of Brunei).

Life

Ismail bin Omar Abdul Aziz is from Johor, Malaysia. He studied in Egypt at Azhar University and Cairo University . In 1956 he was appointed Vice Mufti of Johor. From 1958 to 1961 he was the chief cadre of Johor. In 1962 he was appointed Mufti Negara Brunei for three years. After this post had been vacant for two years, he was appointed Mufti Negara Brunei for life in 1967. He held this office until his death in 1994. He is buried in the Kubah Makam Diraja Brunei , namely the mausoleum of the Rajas of Brunei.

In his terms of office from 1962 to 1965 and from 1967 to 1994 he issued numerous fatwas for the Sunnis in Brunei. He published 20 books in 31 editions (including those published after his death) in 4 languages ​​(including the translated editions). In his book Fatwa mufti kerajaan sepanyang tahun 1962–1969. Among other things, he banned the sale of alcoholic beverages in Brunei. That is why he has received the nickname Sunna Defender in large parts of East South Asia.
