Isnogud
Isnogud (from is no good "good for nothing / is a no-good") is a comic series that was created by René Goscinny (texts) and Jean Tabary (drawings) in 1962 for the first edition of the French magazine Record . It is set in medieval Baghdad . The main character is the insidious Grand Vizier of the same name , who repeatedly tries in vain to eliminate the caliph in order to ascend the throne himself.
content
Grand Vizier Isnogud desperately wants to “become caliph instead of caliph”. He cunningly tries by all means to eliminate the caliph Harun al-Pussah and to ascend the throne himself. However, his assassinations are all failures. A recurring motive is that the unsuccessful assassinations, due to stupid coincidences, appear to the childishly naive caliph as a boon or extraordinary performance of his grand vizier, whereupon Isnogud rises even further in the caliph's favor. Yet Isnogud continues to strive to get rid of him. Isnogud's henchman in all attacks is his loyal rental slave Tunichgud (French: Dilat Laraht ).
The authors appear as minor characters in various albums.
History of the series
From 1968, the stories also appeared in the magazine Pilote , later stories were drawn directly for comic books. After Goscinny's death in 1977, Tabary continued the series alone.
In 2008 the first volume was published without the intervention of one of the original authors as a family production by Nicolas Tabary and his siblings Muriel and Stéphane. After Jean Tabary's death in 2011, the family sold all rights to the series to Anne Goscinny's publisher IMAV éditions. Since 2012, new volumes, written by Laurent Vassilian and drawn by Nicolas Tabary, have been published under the title Les nouvelles aventures d'Iznogoud ( The New Adventures of Grand Vizier Isnogud ).
Publication in Germany
In Germany the comics debuted in 1970 in the comic magazine MV-Comix of Egmont Ehapa Verlag , where they appeared until 1977. The albums have also been released by Ehapa since 1974, initially under the series title The Adventures of Caliph Harun al Pussah . Some of the stories were later printed in Yps and the magazine The Speech Bubble.
Since 1974 the albums have been published by Ehapa both in softcover and, in much smaller editions, in hardcover. There are now 30 volumes of the French original series, the first 14 of which were written by Goscinny, as well as volumes 22, 23 and 24, which were only published after his death. In addition, the anthology His meanest pranks appeared , which contains volumes 3, 6 and 8. Volume 20 is a reprint from the series Die Nightträume des Isnogud published by Boiselle Löhmann.
From March 2008 to March 2010 a nine-volume complete edition was published by the Egmont Comic Collection under the title The Collected Adventures of Grand Vizier Isnogud , which was continued in 2017 with Volume 10 and the new adventures.
The New Adventures of Grand Vizier Isnogud, which have been published in France since 2012 , have been published in German in the form of single albums at dani books since October 2015 .

filming
The originally planned project of a film adaptation with Louis de Funès in the leading role was dropped after the death of René Goscinny.
In 1995 a 26-part animated series was created in which stories from the comics were filmed. Some details have been changed, for example, in contrast to the comics, there are no disabled people (one-legged, etc.). Since April 2009 the 26 double episodes have been available in German on three DVDs.

Based on the original, parodies were created , for example in the satirical magazine Titanic with Schröder as Harun al Pussah and Müntefering as Isnogud.
In France, calife à la place du calife ("caliph instead of caliph") has entered common parlance as an expression for someone who tries in vain to achieve something. The Prix Iznogoud has been a negative prize in France since 1992 , which is awarded to people in French society who have failed in a certain, ambitious project.
