Gallinara is an island near the Ligurian coast. It is located in the Riviera di Ponente in the immediate vicinity of the municipality of Albenga . The area of the island forms the Riserva naturale regional dell'Isola Gallinara ( German : Regional nature reserve of the island Gallinara ).

environment

The island is home to one of the largest nesting colonies of the Mediterranean seagull ( Larus michahellis ) in the Ligurian Sea .

history

The island got its name from the wild chicken populations ( Gallina is translated as chicken or hen ), which, according to Cato and Varro , lived there in antiquity. In the 4th century it served Martin von Tours as a shelter and was later the location of a Benedictine monastery , which was sold to private individuals in 1842.

Various artifacts and utensils , some from the 5th century BC, which come from the area around Marseille , have been found on the surrounding seabed . Some finds are exhibited in the Albenga Maritime Museum. Among them are amphorae from the time of the Roman Empire . The first underwater recovery in history was carried out off the island of Gallinara in 1950 under the direction of Nino Lamboglia .
