Isola il Toro ( German "Bull Island" ) is the southernmost island of the Sulcis Archipelago off the southwest coast of Sardinia and thus the southernmost land mass in the Italian region of Sardinia. Administratively, the uninhabited island belongs to the municipality ( Comune ) Sant'Antioco in the province of Sud Sardegna .
geography
Isola il Toro is located around 22 km southwest of Porto Pino (Comune Sant'Anna Arresi ) on the Sardinian mainland, 11 km south of Sant'Antioco , the largest island in the Sulcis archipelago, and 10 km southwest of the small and also uninhabited island of Vacca ( "Cow Island" ). The approximately round island of Toro has a diameter of 350 to 400 m and has an area of 11 hectares (0.11 km²). It rises steeply from the sea and reaches a height of 112 m above sea level; at the highest point there is a lighthouse.
fauna
The island is an important breeding area for numerous bird species, some of which are rare, such as the eleonor's falcon ( Falco eleonorae ), the peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ), the petrel ( Hydrobates pelagicus ) and the yellow-billed shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ). Toro therefore forms, together with the neighboring island of Vacca, a Zona di protezione speciale (ZPS), a European bird sanctuary .
