Isola la Vacca , also Isolotta la Vacca , ( German "Cow Island" ) is the second southernmost island in the Sulcis Archipelago off the southwest coast of Sardinia . Administratively, the uninhabited island belongs to the municipality ( Comune ) Sant'Antioco in the Italian province of Sud Sardegna .
geography
Isola la Vacca is located 2.5 km southeast of the southern tip of the island of Sant'Antioco and around 10 km north-northeast of the small and also uninhabited island of Isola il Toro , the southernmost island of the Sulcis archipelago. Vacca is 550 m long in north-south direction and up to 250 m wide in east-west direction; their area can be estimated at around 10 ha (0.1 km²). In the north of the island there are some small rocks, of which Il Vitello ( "The Calf" ) is the only one of any size worth mentioning. Vacca rises steeply from the sea; at the highest point there is a lighthouse.
fauna
Like Toro, Vacca is an important breeding area for numerous, sometimes rare, bird species, such as the eleonor's falcon ( Falco eleonorae ), the peregrine falcon ( Falco peregrinus ), the petrel ( Hydrobates pelagicus ) or the yellow-billed shearwater ( Calonectris diomedea ). It therefore forms together with its neighboring island a Zona di protezione speciale (ZPS), a European bird sanctuary .
