Isopentenyl diphosphate isomerases (IPPI) are enzymes that catalyze the rearrangement of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) to dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) and vice versa. They occur in all living things. There are two non-homologous types of IPPI, type I occurs only in eukaryotes and some bacteria , while the FMN- dependent type is found in bacteria and archaea . For animals, the reaction step is important for cholesterol biosynthesis . There are two isoforms in humans, the second of which only occurs in muscles .

Catalyzed reaction

IPPDMAPP

Isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) and dimethyl allyl diphosphate (DMAPP) merge.
