Israel Amir

Israel Amir ( Hebrew ישראל עמיר; * November 11, 1902 in Vilnius , Russian Empire ; † November 1, 2002 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) was an aluf of the Israeli Air Force and its first commander.

Life

Amir was born in Vilnius and emigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine in 1923 . He became a member of the Hagana , an underground paramilitary organization of Jewish settlers, and rose to become commander of the Sherut Avir , the Hagana's air force. He was u. a. affected by the Arab uprising . In May 1948, Amir, who was never a pilot himself, became the commander of the new Israeli air force that he led in the Palestine War. His service ended in July 1948. He ended his military career in 1969. He was then Vice President of the Israeli Ambulance Association.

Today a street in Herzlia is named after Amir.
