Itō Shōha ( Japanese 伊藤 小坡 , actually Ujitoko Sato (宇 治 土 公 佐登), born March 24, 1877 in Ujiurata, Watara County (now part of Ise ), Mie Prefecture ; died July 1, 1968 ) was a Japanese Nihonga painter -Direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Itō Shōha was born as the eldest daughter of the high priest at the Sarutahiko Shrine (猿 田 彦 神社, Sarutahiko-jinja), Ujitoko Sadamoto (宇 治 土 公 貞 幹). She began studying painting under Isobe Hyakurin (磯 部 百 鱗; 1836–1906), then went to Kyoto in 1898 and trained under Morikawa Sobun (森川 曽 文; 1847–1902). After his death in 1902, she moved to Taniguchi Kōkyō (谷口 香 嶠; 1864-1915), who suggested the stage name Shoha to her. In 1908 she married Itō Rojō (伊藤 鷺 城; 1873-1948), who also studied with Taniguchi. In 1925 she was able to exhibit the picture 製作 の 前 at the 9th “Bunter”. She received a 3rd prize for it, with which she became known. She continued to exhibit at the Bunter, but then joined the resistance against the state-organized Bunter and in 1919 became a founding member of the "Nihon jiyū gadan" (日本 自由 画壇). However, she returned the following year to the state exhibition, which was now abbreviated to "Teiten", and exhibited there in the following years.

1922 was as part of the "Japanese-French Art Exchange Exhibition" (日 仏 交換 美術展, Nichifu kōkan bijutsuten) in Paris her picture "Biwa Notes" (琵琶 記) to see, which was purchased by the French government. During the Taishō period , the state exhibition series featured the pictures “Incessantly” (つ づ き も の, Tsuzukimono), “Summer” (夏, Natsu), “Goat's milk” (山羊 の 乳, Yagi no nyū) and other pictures, pictures the genre painting with the simple life as the theme.

With the beginning of the Shōwa period , Itō turned more to genre painting with historical themes, with pictures such as the “Autumn Leaves and Women at the Court” (秋草 と 宮 仕 へ せ る 女 達 shown on the 9th Teiten (1928) , Akikusa to miya-shiseru onnatachi). According to the picture "" (春日 局, Kasuga no Tsubone), which she showed on the 12th Teiten in 1931, she was able to exhibit jury-free. As early as 1928 she had joined Takeuchi Seihō's group of artists Chikujō-kai (竹杖 会).

Itō Shōha is seen as the outstanding painter after Uemura Shōen .
