Ise ( Japanese 伊 勢 市 , - shi , until 1955 Ujiyamada ) is a city in Mie Prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū . It is located on the Shima Peninsula on Ise Bay , south of Nagoya .

The city is located in the middle of an agricultural region where tea and oranges are grown. But lacquer ware , paper and electrical appliances are produced in Ise. There are several shipyards in the port area.

The city of Uji-Yamada was established in 1889 in Watarai County from the cities of Uji and Yamada. In 1906 it became a district as Uji-Yamada-shi ( 宇 治 山田 市 ). In the great Shōwa territorial reform it was renamed after several incorporations in 1955 after the province and the shrine in Ise-shi .
