Itō Yōji

Itō Yōji

Itō Yōji ( Japanese 伊藤 庸 二 ; born March  5, 1901 in Onjuku , Chiba Prefecture ; †  May 9, 1955 in Tokyo Prefecture ) was a Japanese scientist and electrical engineer . Before and during the Second World War, he played an important role on the Japanese side in the development of the magnetron and the "radio range finders" based on it, i.e. radar devices .

Youth and education

Born and raised in a fishing village on the east coast of Japan, his father, who was the headmaster of the primary school there, encouraged him to pursue a career in science. He studied electrical engineering at what was then the Imperial University of Tokyo (today: University of Tokyo ). He then joined the Imperial Japanese Navy and served at sea for several years.
