The Italian Chapel ( Italian Chapel ) is a Roman Catholic church building on the Scottish Orkney island of Lamb Holm . In 1987 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

In the so-called Camp 60 were during the Second World War Italian prisoners of war interned on Lamb Holm to the construction of the Churchill Barriers participate. The prisoners made a statue of St. George, the dragon slayer . A chapel was built from 1942 onwards, driven by an Italian clergyman and with the approval of the camp commandant. Domenico Chiocchetti directed the work completed in 1944. After the camp was closed, the building remained unused and its condition deteriorated. In 1958, Chiocchetti was located in Moena and, in collaboration with local craftsmen, was invited to the Orkney Islands for restoration from 1960. In 1961, his home community donated the Jesus figure to the right of the entrance. Chiocchetti's wife Maria donated 14 carved wooden panels with the Stations of the Cross during a visit in 1964 . In 1992, 50 years after the start of construction, the former prisoners held a common mass in the chapel.
