The Italian Horse Protection Association (IHP) runs a center in Montaione , Italy, which takes in horses confiscated according to the Italian Animal Welfare Act and takes care of their rehabilitation.

Goal setting

Abused donkey

Battered horses

The Italian Horse Protection Association (IHP) aims to provide a physical and mental recovery space for horses confiscated under Italian law 189/2004 (cruelty to animals). In addition, IHP aims to increase society's awareness of the behavioral characteristics and needs of horses. IHP believes that horse needs are often misunderstood, albeit in good faith, and treated or kept inappropriately.

Equine infectious anemia

EIAV positive horses that live in isolation but still enjoy grazing

Another field of activity of the IHP is to raise awareness of the equine disease infectious anemia in equines (also equine infectious anemia, EIA). EIA is a viral infection of horses , with a febrile anemia ( anemia associated) and usually fatal ends. Infected animals remain virus carriers for life. EIA is a notifiable animal disease in Germany and is included in the list of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The disease is enzootic in parts of Europe , America , the Middle and Far East , Russia and South Africa , but the animal disease control has made it rather rare. The EIAV was the first retrovirus to demonstrate mechanical transmission through blood-sucking insects .

EIA, according to the IHP, is a disease that is viewed as more dangerous than it actually is. The IHP bases its opinion on findings from the cooperation between the IHP and the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Perugia. With the approval of the local veterinary authority and in accordance with applicable standards, IHP is a center that can accept EIAV-positive horses in which the disease has not broken out and enable them to graze in an isolated paddock .

Location

The organization is located in the municipality of Montaione , Metropolitan City of Florence , Italy . There the admitted animals live freely on approx. 100 hectares , but under constant control by many volunteer employees and veterinarians who support IHP.

Scientific collaboration

IHP cooperates with the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Perugia in the field of research on the infectious anemia of equines and the ethology of horses, as well as with the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pisa in the field of scientific internships with horses in freedom.
