List of breeds of chicken

The Italian chicken is a medium-sized breed of chicken and is listed with 21 colors by the Bund Deutscher Rassegeflügelzüchter (BDRG). The white form came to America in the 19th century and from there was also known in Europe as the Livorno chicken or American Leghorn (BDRG). The differences are small.

properties

By Italian chicken various color varieties have been came to its own (rebhuhnhalsig, silver, black, black mottled, striped, yellow, china, colored, gold colored, characteristic color , blue partridge, pearl gray-orangehalsig, orangehalsig, rotgesattelt, red, blue, white, light, blue - white checkered, gold-black lined).

Minorka were crossed in order to breed the black color .

The weight of the rooster is between 2.25 and 3 kg, the weight of the hen between 1.75 and 2.5 kg. The laying performance is approx. 190 white eggs per year, the laying activity begins at an age of 5 - 6 months. The animals are very lively and spirited. When feeding, it is important to ensure that it is balanced and in moderation. Italian chickens tend to become "fatty", which limits the laying performance enormously. The roosters of some bloodlines protect their hens very reliably and are accordingly extremely aggressive towards humans.

The sex of the chicks in color coding and partridge color can be differentiated on the first day. For example: The partridge-necked roosters, as day-old chicks, have a white down on their breasts, while the hen chicks have a slightly yellow-brownish down on their breasts from day one! Some bloodlines still have the breeding instinct themselves and are suitable for natural breeding. Unfortunately, most bloodlines no longer have a breeding instinct, which means that artificial brood has to be used, which also has its advantages.

In Germany, Italians are allowed to use two types of comb: single comb and rose comb . In BDRG Leghorn and Italians are recognized as two separate races. White Italians and (white) Leghorns are not easy to distinguish for the layman. Internationally, the names are partly synonymous. Sometimes they also denote a certain direction of cultivation.

With the dwarf Italian there is also a dwarf form, which are looked after in different special clubs, sorted by color .

Existence and endangerment

The Italian chicken was added to the list of endangered domestic animal breeds . The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food lists the Italians in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in the lowest hazard class V (observation). According to this, there were 2769 roosters and 15967 hens in Germany in 2009.
