Origin and history

The Italian Greyhound is an ancient Italian breed that, like many Mediterranean greyhounds , could descend from the Egyptian greyhound species Tesem . This came from Egypt to Greece and from there to Rome and became the favorite dog of the patricians . In the 14th century the greyhound spread all over Europe and found enthusiastic fans at royal courts, including the Prussian King Friedrich II. Johann Gottfried Schadow perpetuated this preference in a statuette of the king with his dogs.

description

The Italian greyhound has all the characteristics of the great greyhound in a refined form. With a size of 32 to 38 cm, it weighs up to 5 kg. This dog is very graceful and elegant, he has short, fine, soft-silky hair with the colors black, gray, slate gray and yellow ( it . Isabella ) in all possible nuances. Two-tone wind chimes are permitted in the USA ( AKC ) and England ( KC ), but are not permitted in the FCI standard. The latter only tolerates white markings on the chest and paws.

In autumn 2015 the European standard was revised by the FCI and the English nomenclature changed from Italian Greyhound to Italian Sighthound . The changes to the standard came into effect on January 1, 2016. A German translation of the name is not yet available.

In Germany, the Italian Greyhound breed is looked after by the German Greyhound Breeding and Racing Association (DWZRV), Duisburg. The current member of the breeding commission for the breed is Marc Goldschmidt.
