Itu is a commune ( municipality ) in the Brazilian state of São Paulo . In 2018, around 172,300 people lived in the municipality, which was founded in 1610, on around 640 km². Itu enjoys the official status of Estância Turística , a tourist destination. The name of the place comes from the native Tupí language and means something like "big waterfall". Itu achieved great wealth from growing coffee and was once considered the most prosperous place in the state. In 1873 the first republican assembly of Brazil took place in Itu, which finally culminated in the proclamation of the Brazilian republic in 1889 and finally to the constitution of the United Brazilian States in 1891.
These days, Itu is mainly focused on tourism. The “large objects” created by the humorist Simplício in the city center - such as oversized public telephones and traffic lights - have attracted a certain amount of attention. In 2009 and 2010, the reality TV show A Fazenda - a counterpart to the German Die Farm , in Brazil a great success with R $ 2,000,000 in prize money - was staged, which further increased the city's profile.
