Iulianus (Africa)

Iulianus was a Roman usurper in North Africa against Maximian (approx. 296/297).

The governor of Mauretania Caesariensis , Aurelius Litua, waged war against several Moorish tribes between 290 and 293 , including the Quinquegentanei (" five peoples "). 296 or 297 was Julian, nothing more is known about the other, in Africa for anti-emperor declared. It is uncertain whether the usurper relied on the rebels or was raised to defend them. Maximian appeared in person and threw down his opponents in the summer of 297, Julianus committed suicide. As a result, the emperor strengthened the Limes against the Berbers and expanded Carthage further.
