Ivan Ganchev
Ivan Gantschev (born January 4, 1925 in Veliko Tarnowo , Bulgaria , † June 29, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Bulgarian-German artist and children's book illustrator.
Life
Ganchev was born in Bulgaria in 1925. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. After studying at the Art Academy in Sofia , he worked as a freelance artist and graphic designer. In 1967 he left Bulgaria and settled in Frankfurt am Main.
In 1973 his first picture book “Mäusemax flieg um die Welt” was published by Gakken Co. in Japan. Over the years he has illustrated over 70 picture books, most of which he also made up the stories.
Gantschev's books have appeared in several countries and languages, and his originals have been exhibited at home and abroad. For his pictures he was awarded the Golden Plaque of the Biennale in Bratislava and the Children's Book Illustration Prize of the City of Vienna.
