Hermann-Josef Frisch (* 1947 ) is a German non-fiction author , religious educator and Roman Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of Cologne and pastor in retirement . Most of his books deal with world religions , especially Christianity .

Life

Author and religious educator

As an author, Frisch has written numerous non-fiction books in the fields of theological adult education , religious studies , community work and religious education as well as children's books since the 1980s . As of January 1, 2017, Frisch had written 75 of his own publications and was involved in a further 45 publications as a co-author . Most of the self-publications were published by Patmos-Verlag , some by Konrad Theiss Verlag , Topos Plus , Butzon & Bercker , Verlag Herder , Gütersloher Verlagshaus , Quell Verlag , Episcopal aid organization Misereor and Matthias-Grünewald-Verlag as well as the publishing house by missio .

A clear focus of his work as an author lies in the field of religious education. He wrote:

  • the series Life Paths , textbooks for religious instruction in the four primary school classes including comments and media (together with Esther Dreiner),
  • Much-used preparation courses for first communion and the firm sacrament in the parish catechesis , for example five communion courses for parishes, most recently “bread of life”.

Numerous publications are devoted to world religions , including The Koran for Christians. Discovering common ground (2016) - in the opinion of the magazine Publik Forum, "an important book that contributes to the discussion of religions".

Hermann Josef Frisch, who at times also held a teaching position in the didactics of religion at the University of Bonn , is close to the renewal of the Catholic Church by the Second Vatican Council , but at the same time rejects essential elements of the council's image of the church; so he denied the divine character of the church emphasized in Lumen Gentium 8 and its foundation by Christ. With regard to Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Frisch spoke of "backward- looking pontificate ".

In 2014 he opposed - so Frisch - " sect-like groups on the fringes of the church"; in particular, he criticized the spiritual family “Das Werk” , the Engelwerk and its order community Regular Canon of the Holy Cross as well as the Catholic Scouts of Europe (KPE) and the Order Servants of Jesus and Mary (SJM) who look after them . The SSPX and similar groups he described as "the worst excesses of an on Catholic soil 'grown fundamentalism." To the right of the Catholic Church, he also scored the Opus Dei , the Legionaries of Christ and associated with the latter Regnum Christi , the Fraternity of St. Peter , he described as "less extreme".

Since November 2014 he has been the author of the non-fiction agency Altepost 2015 by Klaus Altepost, the former publisher of the Gütersloh publishing house, together with the artists Otmar Alt and Thomas Kabel , the psychologist Susanne Bäumer and the ghostwriter Carsten Tergast .

In 2016, Frisch published a fictitious correspondence between Martin Luther and Pope Francis , whom he called “Christian brothers in diversity” and referred to their biographical similarities; at the same time, however, he also criticized Luther's hatred of Turks and Jews . Frisch expressed skepticism about whether the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (2017) would advance ecumenism .

Pastoral work

Fresh is a priest in the archdiocese of Cologne and received the 1972 ordination . After studying theology and sinology in Bonn and Cologne and chaplaincy in Cologne-Mülheim, Monheim-Baumberg and Eitorf, he took over pastoral positions in Cologne-Ehrenfeld, Lohmar, Morsbach-Lichtenberg and Troisdorf-Eschmar. The study of Sinology was inspired by an uncle who worked as a Steyler missionary in China. Nevertheless, he did not pursue the career of a religious scholar, but saw his vocation in the pastoral service as a priest in the parish . From 2011 to 2013 he was a retired pastor in the Overath Parish Association. In 2012, critics accused him of shortening the Christian message by emphasizing the good news but omitting eternal judgment and hell . He also left out sentences in the prayer at random . In this regard, Frisch stated that he would continue to spread good news and not threatening news; this is his mission. He accused his critics of "Stasi methods" and complained that "every word I say is recorded on the shorthand pad by unauthorized recording or transcription and is used against me by the cardinal". A small group from Overath had started an unprecedented smear campaign with slander and defamation in relation to his service organization . He then put in a sabbatical year and temporarily withdrew from pastoral care in September 2012.

In 2012 the pastoral care team expressed their hope that Frisch would “enrich life in the parish again”. During his professional break, Frisch declared his intention to return to work as a pastor in Overather. Towards the end of the sabbatical year in August 2013, the responsible Archbishop Joachim Cardinal Meisner Frisch refused permission to resume pastoral care in the Overath parish. Dechant Gereon Bonnacker explained for the pastoral care team: “The future activities of Pastor Frisch will be agreed upon and decided with Cardinal Meisner. For us, all the people entrusted to us on site are of great concern - but also fellowship with our cardinal ”. Thereupon Frisch ended his efforts for the pastoral care position and made a press release, after which he refused a transfer; his talks with the Archdiocese's personnel department would continue. More than 300 people wrote to Cardinal Meisner behind Frisch, and there were protests against the complainants in all seven Overath parishes. After seeking medical advice, he renounced any further pastoral work in Overath in September 2013.

Relationship to non-Christian religions

After completing his studies, Frisch took various trips to Asia , including Hinduism and Daoism . In literature and events he also dealt with non-Christian religions such as Judaism , Buddhism and Islam . On the occasion of the 200th birthday of the founder of religion Bahāʾullāh , he appeared as a keynote speaker at the Overather Bahá'i community in October 2017 .

Private

Hermann-Josef Frisch lived in Lohmar until August 2012 , from where he moved to Overath. In September 2013 he retired as a priest, but continued to work as a book author.
