Ivan Kožarić (born June 10, 1921 in Petrinja ) is a Croatian sculptor who is also active in the fields of assemblage , photography , painting and installations .

Kožarić studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the late 1940s. He was a member of the Gorgona Group , which existed from 1959 to 1966. Other members were Mangos (1921–1987), Miljenko Horvat (1935–2012), Marijan Jevšovar (1922–1998), Julije Knifer (1924–2000), Matko Meštrović (1933), Radoslav Putar (1929–1994), Đuro Seder (1927) and Josip Vaništa (1924).

“As an independent thinker always on the lookout for artistic freedom, Ivan Kožarić has created a complex, surprising and still unclassifiable oeuvre far removed from the prevailing styles and directions. According to his statement, one must always maintain the continuity of the contradiction with oneself , his work denies any idea of linearity and development. "

“In this desolate atmosphere [one had to] do diversion and subversion ... This terrible know-it-all system that did not get creativity going, even though it persistently spoke of freedom of expression for decades. When it came to realizing something that was really free and radical, nothing came of it, especially if, like me, it was 'non-regime loyalty'. "
