Ivan Lönnberg (born November 12, 1891 in Stockholm , † April 26, 1918 in Cachy , France ) was a Swedish painter and athlete.

Career as a painter

Ivan Lönnberg was a painter who preferred the style of modern painting. His style was similar to that of his Swedish colleagues Isaac Grünewald or Tor Bjurström. At the art school of the painter Carl Wilhelmson he devoted himself particularly to figure composition and interiors.

Lönnberg's work is relatively small. During his creative period he made about 50 works. Most of them are self-portraits or works from his time at art school. Two of his works and some sketchbooks are on display at Moderna Museet , a state museum for modern art in Stockholm. 48 of his works were shown in a commemorative exhibition in 1942.

Lönnberg was friends with the painter Nils von Dardel , who, like other painter friends, painted portraits of Lönnberg. In 1914 Ivan Lönnberg moved to Paris , where he joined a circle of Swedish painters. In addition to Isaac Grünwald, Einar Jolin and Eric Detthow were also part of this group of artists.

Sports career

Ivan Lönnberg was a long-distance runner who specialized in marathons . He ran for the Stockholm club IF Olympia . At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm he was a member of Sweden's 12-man marathon team. Like five other of his teammates, Lönnberg could not finish the run, which took place in summer temperatures. Lönnberg was sick, the heat of the day was added.

military service

After the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Ivan Lönnberg volunteered for the French Foreign Legion . In the French town of Cachy in the Somme department , he was fatally wounded on April 26, 1918 at the age of 26 when he was shot in the left eye.
