Ivan Pavlovich Minajew
Ivan Pawlowitsch Minajew ( Russian Иван Павлович Ivan Pavlovič Minaev , also Minayeff, born in 1840 ; died in 1890 ) was a Russian orientalist and linguist who is considered the first Russian Indologist .
His students included Sergei Oldenburg , Fyodor Shcherbatskoi and Dmitri Kudrjawskij ( Russian Дмитрий Николаевич Кудрявский ).
As a student of the sinologist Vasily Wassiljew at the University of Saint Petersburg , he became interested in literature of the Pali language and went abroad to compile a catalog of Pali manuscripts from the British Museum in London and the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris (not published) . His Russian Pali grammar (1872) was quickly translated into French (1874) and English (1882).
His most important work is Buddism. Issledowanija i materialy ( Buddhism: Studies and Materials ), published in St. Petersburg in 1887.
Minajew was among the first European orientalists to recognize that the study of Buddhism and Pali were essential to understanding the history and society of ancient India.
He was a member of the Russian Geographical Society and made trips to India and Burma in the years 1874–1875, 1880 and 1885–1886. His travel reports and diaries from India and Burma were published in 1958 ( Travels in and diaries of India & Burma ), translated into English.
