Ivan Rakovec

Ivan Rakovec (born September 18, 1899 in Ljubljana , † August 3, 1985 ibid) was a Yugoslav paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Rakovec studied in Ljubljana with a diploma in 1926 and received his doctorate there in 1927 on the geomorphology of the Ljubljana basin. He was at the University of Ljubljana from 1932 , from 1933 as an assistant professor and from 1946 as a full professor of geology and paleontology, which he was until 1973. The Paleontological Institute in Ljubljana bears his name.

He is considered to be the founder of Quaternary research in Slovenia. He dealt with geology, stratigraphy and fossil mammals of the Pleistocene .

He was a corresponding member of the Paleontological Society . In 1949 he became a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He was the founder of their geological institute.
