Ivanhoe is a progressive metal band from Bietigheim-Bissingen in Baden-Württemberg .

history

Ivanhoe was founded in 1986 by Markus Britsch (keyboard), Giovanni Soulas (bass), Matthias Lorenz (guitar) and Lars Hörnig (drums). The demos Behind the Wall (1988), Written in Stone (1989) and Play Express (1992) were created with changing line- ups . The debut album Visions and Reality was then made with the cast Andy B. Franck (vocals), Chuck Schuler (guitar), Giovanni Soulas (bass), Lars Hönig (drums) and Markus Britsch (keyboard). The album Symbols of Time followed in 1994 . On the European tour together with Nevermore and Iced Earth , guitarist Schuler surprisingly got out for personal reasons. Welsch, who played guitar and sang on the demo Behind the Wall and worked as a live mixer for the band, stepped in without further ado.

Polarized , the group's third album, became the apex of the band's history. After singer Andy B. Franck wanted to tend towards Thrash Metal , the group was disbanded. Giovanni Soulas and Achim Welsch founded the Charisma project, which was dissolved again after the release of the debut album Karma . Andy B. Franck joined Brainstorm and founded Symphorce in 1998 with Lars Hönig .

In 2001 Soulas and Welsch tried to reanimate Ivanhoe. As a singer she could Mischa Mang win of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar the Judas in the Gandersheimer Domfestspielen had sung in 2001, worked for the Nova as a sound designer. The work on the fourth album took almost four years. In 2005, Walk was released in Mindfields ( Massacre Records ). In addition to Mang, Soulas and Welsch, the line-up was completed by Richard Seibel (keyboard) and Sebastian Brauchle (drums). Ex-drummer Lars Hönig can be heard on two songs. The successor Lifeline (2008) was created in the same line-up .

At the end of 2010 Sebastian Brauchle (drums) decided to leave the band due to other musical commitments. A little later Matthias Biehl became the band's new drummer. After a few successful concerts (Queensryche, Scorpions, Building a Force, Bang your Head), Achim Welsch (guitar) also split from the band in mid-2011. The sixth studio album Systematrix was released on May 24, 2013 . With the release, singer Mischa Mang and drummer Matthias Biehl finally got out. Alex Koch (vocals) and Rob Kudlek (drums) were brought into the band for the following concerts (including Queensrÿche ).

style

Ivanhoe can be settled in progressive metal . The music lives from the "change from soulful, melodic and heavy passages" or "a mix of catchy riffs and interlaced prog parts". The band was compared to Dream Theater in particular in the 1990s and was long considered "the German answer" to this band. The album Polarized was a compromise between the old, progressive style and the attempts of singer Franck, whose high voice was often criticized on earlier releases, to go in a somewhat harder direction.

After the reunification, however, the group relied more on independence, the new songs are mostly in the mid-tempo range and rely more on atmosphere than on technical ability.
