Iversity is an online education platform. iversity offers online courses in the field of higher education and further education, so-called MOOCs ( Massive Open Online Course ). Enrollment in the courses is free of charge. The languages ​​of instruction for the partly bilingual courses are mostly German and English. iversity works with individual professors and lecturers as well as with various European universities to produce the courses. Some of the courses offered were selected in 2013 as part of a competition. The MOOC platform iversity.org went online in October 2013. iversity now has 600,000 users, cooperates with 41 universities and has so far offered 63 courses (as of February 2015). The company has branches in Bernau near Berlin and Berlin . The company filed for bankruptcy in June 2016 . On August 9, 2016, it was announced that the Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH publishing group was taking over iversity as part of a restructuring . In the future, iversity wants to concentrate on further training offers for companies.

  • In 2008 the founder Jonas Liepmann developed a beta version of the iversity platform

  • One year after the relaunch, in October 2014, iversity's total funding increased to more than € 5 million.

Courses

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) contain visual elements (course videos, animations, graphics), interactive elements (simulations) and written materials (scientific articles). All elements can be viewed as often as required. Teachers and students can interact with each other in discussion forums. With quizzes, teachers can check the success of the learners. Most courses on iversity.org end with an exam or a final project. Exams can be carried out on-site or online as a remotely supervised exam. Students at iversity.org can choose between different study paths with which they can acquire different certificates. There are costs for some certificates. Universities that offer courses on iversity.org can award ECTS points for passing them. This enables students to have credits earned online count towards their face-to-face study. ECTS credits are used by all European universities. A certificate with ECTS credit points is usually issued after passing an attendance test.

In the course production, iversity works with European universities and individual university lecturers. The teachers produce their own MOOC with technical support from the platform operator. iversity works with the following institutions and organizations, among others:

Business model

iversity generates its revenue from the sale of certificates that students receive after successfully completing their courses. These courses are offered to all types of learners, including college students or employees. Thanks to the ECTS integration, students can have courses credited towards their on-site study. iversity was able to raise € 5 million in venture capital. The investors are T-Venture , bmp media investors, BFB Frühphasenfonds, Masoud Kamali, Westtech Ventures, CRALS, Peter Zühlsdorf and Kontor B45. Jörg Dräger and Édouard Husson are members of the iversity advisory board .
