Ivan Kondratjewitsch Zaitsev ( Russian Иван Кондратьевич Зайцев * 1805 in Gorodishche , Penza province , Russian Empire ; † December 11 . Jul / 23. December  1887 greg. In Poltava , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Russian- Ukrainian painter .

Life

Ivan Saizew was born the son of serfs in what is now Gorodishche Raion in the Russian Oblast of Penza . With the permission of his liege lord, he studied from October 1823 to 1827 at the AV Stupin School of Painting , a private art school in Arsamas . After his master passed away, his new owner, who lived in Saint Petersburg , allowed him to study at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts from 1830 . There he received a silver medal on May 1, 1834 for his self-portrait and on December 24, 1835 for a group picture. In 1837 he received the diploma of a free, non-classical, artist. In Petersburg he met Taras Shevchenko in the early 1830s . After he got married, he taught painting at the first St. Petersburg Cadet Corps between October 1839 and 1847 and from 1848 on he taught painting at the Poltava Cadet Corps for 37 years . In Poltava he was a respected figure in public life and the founder of the women's high school there, where he also taught drawing for many years. He died in Poltava at the age of 82.
